Functional Fitness Training in Vancouver
Master functional movement patterns for longevity, strength, and pain-free living
Functional Fitness Is a Core Tenet of Our Training Philosophy
Functional fitness prepares your body for the demands of daily life. Hiking the West Coast Trail. Carrying heavy groceries in one trip. Playing with your kids without back pain. Everyone’s goals are a bit different.
Traditional gym programs isolate muscles one at a time. Functional athletics trains movements as integrated systems. Your body works as a unit in the real world. It should train that way too.
At Coast Athletics, we build programs around the six foundational movement patterns. These are the mechanics your body uses for every physical task, from getting out of a chair to loading a kayak on the roof rack.
The Six Foundational Movement Patterns
-
Real-world use: Sitting down, standing up, getting off the floor
Training focus: Quad strength, knee stability, hip mobility
Why it matters: Losing squat depth is one of the first signs of physical decline. Maintaining it keeps you independent.
-
Real-world use: Picking things up from the floor, bending over the sink
Training focus: Glutes, hamstrings, lower back (posterior chain)
Why it matters: A strong hinge protects your spine. Most lower back injuries happen when people lift with a weak or untrained hinge pattern.
-
Real-world use: Walking, climbing stairs, stepping over obstacles
Training focus: Single-leg stability, balance, correcting asymmetries
Why it matters: Most movement happens on one leg at a time. Bilateral exercises (squats, deadlifts) miss the stability demands of real-world movement.
-
The Push
Real-world use: Pushing open doors, getting up from the ground, moving furniture
Training focus: Chest, shoulders, triceps, core stability
Why it matters: Upper body pushing strength declines fast without training. Maintaining it keeps everyday tasks manageable.
-
Real-world use: Opening heavy doors, pulling yourself up, carrying bags
Training focus: Back, biceps, rear shoulders, grip strength
Why it matters: Pulling strength counteracts the forward hunch from desk work and phone use. It protects shoulder health.
-
Real-world use: Groceries, luggage, moving boxes, holding kids
Training focus: Grip strength, core stability, full-body coordination
Why it matters: Loaded carries build the kind of strength that transfers directly to daily tasks. They also reveal weaknesses other exercises hide.

No. We teach the foundational movement patterns from the ground up. Beginners learn proper form from day one. Experienced lifters refine their technique and address gaps in their training.

We design programs around your body. If certain movements don't work for you, we find alternatives. If you're working with a physio or doctor, we build your training around their recommendations.
-
Often, yes. Many chronic pain issues come from weakness or imbalance in supporting muscles. Weak glutes contribute to back pain. Weak hips contribute to knee pain. Functional training addresses root causes by strengthening the full movement chain, not just the area that hurts.
-
Active rehab focuses on recovery from a specific injury, often with clinical oversight. Functional fitness is ongoing training that builds strength and prevents future problems. Many clients come to us after completing physio, ready to build on their rehab foundation.
